Illumasonix Reveals Strong Data from Human Study on its Hemodynamic Imaging Technology

09-Feb-2009
Boston, Massachusetts - Illumasonix, Inc. has released the initial results from its first human feasibility study on its Echo Particle Image Velocimetry (Echo PIV) hemodynamic imaging technology conducted under a collaborative agreement between Diabetes and Vascular Medicine Research at Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, U.K. and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The first cohort of 10 patients has generated a correlation coefficient above 92% when compared to phase contrast MRI which is the current standard for measuring blood velocity fields in the carotid artery.

Normal hemodynamics are a crucial component of cardiovascular health while distorted hemodynamics have been shown to be associated with the onset and progression of vascular diseases including atherosclerosis. Current imaging technologies however, do not provide an inexpensive and widely available means of obtaining this important measure of health. Illumasonix’s Echo PIV technology will be the first technology to fill this gap. Cardiovascular disease has been estimated to cost the U.S. in excess of $60 billion annually.

The objective of the ongoing study is to test the ability of Echo PIV to generate inexpensive, detailed 2D blood velocity fields of the carotid artery with good temporal and spatial resolution. The study includes Sonovue as the ultrasound contrast agent used in conjunction with Echo-PIV and will ultimately involve 40 patients.

“We were very pleased to find such strong correlations with the first subjects because often the initial data improves with technique refinement and adjustment.” stated Erick Rabins the Company’s CEO.  He continued, “It shows the strength of the technology and we anticipate in the near future Echo PIV will be a primary imaging tool in the diagnosis and tracking of cardiovascular disease.”

About Illumasonix, LLC, and Allied Minds, Inc.

Illumasonix LLC  is a privately-held company formed by Allied Minds, Inc. in cooperation with the University of Colorado to commercialize a minimally-invasive method to provide quantitative information on complex blood flow in the treatment of vascular disease. Website: www.illumasonix.com

Allied Minds, Inc. is the premier seed organization for early-stage technology. The company focuses on converting academic discoveries into commercial reality by working exclusively with a network of U.S. universities and national labs. By filling the gap between government grants and traditional venture capitalists, Allied Minds focuses on funding innovations with significant transformative potential.  Instead of managing funds, the company fosters early-stage companies through to success, generating value for all stakeholders. Allied Minds has a nationwide footprint with offices in Boston, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, and a European presence in London, United Kingdom.  Website: www.alliedminds.com
